Yankee Stadium Legacy Is Over!

Posted by houstoncollector on May 7, 2009

In both ways imaginable.  First, the deadline for submitting the 6,600 card set expired on 4/30/09, and secondly, the fourth and fifth spots have been filled, as told to us by Upper Deck.

There are just a few things I want to highlight about this monstrosity:  First, the set itself, if put in binders, weighs a hefty 73 pounds.  I shudder to think how much the postage on that is.  Second, apparently the full set required the 81 cards from 2009 Upper Deck Series One.  What, you didn’t know that?  Yeah, I don’t know if anyone did, or if the 81 cards are actually required for the set.  But wouldn’t that be a serious bitch to spend all year collecting this giant set, only to find out that you need 81 more cards, and oh, by the way, you have 2.5 months to get them?

Here’s a blurb from the press release though, that really caught my eye: Adams mentioned that he purchased 14 cases’ worth of Upper Deck baseball products and countless lots of YSL cards on eBay to find the majority of his cards. “But in the end, it was Leo’s help that got me there,” said Adams.

Dude bought 14 cases of cards.  And then had to buy the majority on eBay . And then still needed help from another collector (who also got one of the five slots).  And you want to tell me this contest wasn’t skewed very heavily towards the heavy purchasers of product?  Sheesh.  I admit, the prize is cool, but …. I have a feeling that this may go down in history as one of the most reviled products of the early 21st century, and may be a sign of much of what is wrong with the industry today.  Granted, Yankee fans probably ate this thing up.

Still and all, congratulations to Leo Wiznitzer and Joshua Adams for completing this set.  Hope you enjoy your prize.
