    Blowout Cards

Congratulations, Mario

Posted by houstoncollector on May 22, 2009

One of the first blogs I read, along with Stale Gum, was Mario’s Wax Heaven.  Those are the two guys that inspired me to start blogging, and I’ve always enjoyed Mario’s professionalism, even when he was getting the shaft thanks to the guys at Beckett.  He’s never been afraid to speak his mind, and has always shown his love for the game as well as collecting, even when he hasn’t been able to afford it.  He’s gone from collecting just Canseco, to Canseco and Miller, to Canseco, Miller and the Marlins, back to just  Canseco and Miller.

He’s given away more product to his readers than anyone this side of Beckett (if not beyond that), and he’s done it all for free.  He could have put ads on his website and probably made enough to pay for more product, but he’s never been about that.  He was one of, if not the first blogger to get support from Upper Deck and Topps, and then Razor and TriStar, both with news releases and with product, and he’s always been friendly to the rest of us trying to get started.  Without Mario, I never would have known where to contact Topps or Upper Deck, and would probably have quit months ago.

Without Mario, we would be living in a wasteland of Beckett 24/7, and very little way for any of us to communicate.  Without Mario, this hobby and blogosphere would be a much darker place.  In celebration of Wax Heaven hitting a million on his site, I have gone on Ebay and purchased three Andrew Miller cards that he doesn’t have.  They’re going to go to him along with a 1987 OPC Jose Canseco as soon as they all arrive, and they’re going to him because he deserves them, and because I’m proud to consider him a friend.

Congratulations, Mario.  We owe it all to you.
