2009 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia Preview

Posted by houstoncollector on June 8, 2009

Here’s the product I rarely open, simply because, at $40 a pack ($120-140 a box), it’s too expensive, especially for 16 cards, even if 4 of them are AU/GU. That being said, this is usually a very nice product, with some caveats. As with any higher-end product, you’re rarely going to get good value for the product. If your ‘hit’ in a $40 pack is a 3x GU of a 5th round draft pick, or even a 1st round pick that has no after-market value (See: Gaines Adams in 2007), it’s going to leave a sour taste in your mouth. Don’t get me wrong, they’re nice-looking cards, just … for the price, it’s really not the best option in the world. I’d rather buy a box of Leaf Certified Materials for about the same price, and get the same number of hits with more cards overall. With all of this being said, here’s the preview for 2009 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia, which will launch on September 23, 2009.

You’ll get 4 packs per box, and 4 cards per pack, and 18 boxes per case. Each box will contain 4 AU or GU cards, 1 RC, 1 parallel, 1 insert, and one ‘other’. If the same form holds true from … well, 2006 or possibly earlier, one pack will have an autograph, one pack will have a RPM, one pack will have the presumably big hit of the jumbo, combo, or prime swatches, and the fourth will have one of the first three in it. As Gellman has said, the product really hasn’t changed, and the design is just as busy as it always has been. Expect to see a retail version at $2.99 a pack with the same base cards (except not as shiny with the mirror technology), and fewer inserts and hits, as well. The press sheet is available here.
