Posted by houstoncollector on June 11, 2009

The announcement is here! I have received a box of 2009 Donruss Americana from Panini America, for which I’d like to say thank you. The video box break, in two parts, is below:

Now for the review:

Card Design:  8/10.  The base cards are very nice, with the glossy, chrome-like foil card stock, similiar to Donruss Elite and other products.  The pictures are well-done, with good information on the back of the card to tell you who the people are.  Paralells are easily distingushed, and for the most part, the design of the inserts and hits are very well done.  The only real drawback are the AU/Memo cards, where the autograph sticker is up near the center of the card.  My suggestion for next year would be to make those particular cards have either a separate photo on a horizontal card design, or a cropped image on the same, with the autograph and memo spot on the right-hand side.

Price:  4/10.  Let’s be honest.  With most hits falling in the $5-20 range with a few very notable exceptions, and only 5 cards per pack, this is really not a great value unless you’re getting a great deal on a box, or hit good product.  As I said in the video, once the price of a product gets past a certain point, there needs to be more than five cards.  At retail, this would be around $75 a box, although many stores will be charging $25-30 a pack.  Paying $4-6 a card is insane, especially with the economy in its current state.  Especially considering the retail (presuming there is one this year) will be $3 for 5 cards, but with obviously much fewer shots at a hit.  If you want the set, buy the retail for the cards and buy the hits off eBay for the most part.  Admittedly, this is not aimed at your standard card collector.

Hits:  8/10.  This is what this product excels at, and while the hits I got weren’t high dollar as far as eBay goes, they’re still very sweet with fabric from Frank Sinatra as well as Telly Savalas and Ernest Borgnine.  I can’t really compliain, although the autographs were more meh.  One hit per pack isn’t a bad deal in general, though, and to be honest, they do sell in stores in that scheme, which is why the companies keep producting those types of product.

Overall:  6/10.  This isn’t a bad product, it’s just a bit pricy for most people, even collectors of memorabilia, and people who bust product to sell won’t make their money back, which is true for most mid to high end product.  Add more base cards to the packs, and lower the pack price slightly ($15-20 maybe), and this is a solid product.  The only two reasons I wouldn’t buy it are because I don’t collect movie memorabilia, and because the price/pack is too rich for my blood.  As always, your mileage may vary.
