2009 Upper Deck Series 2 Griffey Variations

Posted by houstoncollector on June 12, 2009

The folks at Upper Deck have let us know that there is yet another variation in 2009 Upper Deck Series 2, cementing 2009 as the Year of the Variation (Topps Heritage, Topps Series 1, Topps Series 2, Upper Deck Series 1 and now Upper Deck Series 2).

This time the card is #855, which is Ken Griffey, Jr.  There are 20 variations of his base card, each depicting him during each of his 20 years in Major League Baseball, with the stats on the back matching the year on the front of the card.  None of the versions are short printed, but given that you’re looking for 20 different versions of the same card, each version can be considered equally short-printed.  The cards are averaging about $20 each on eBay, but it’s only a matter of time before the value drops on these, so if you’ve got them and want to sell, do so now, and if you’re wanting to collect them, wait about six to eight months and get them for $2 each.

While I admit that the concept is cool, I’m starting to wonder if the companies aren’t starting to run variations into the ground.  We’re barely halfway through 2009, and still have football to go.
